Atsuo Hukuda / Shuhei Fukuda
Ryuha

15.02. – 05.04. 2020

Atsuo Hukuda (b. 1958) lives and works in Shibukawa, north of Tokyo. He has been present in Europe on a regular basis for several years. After 2017, this is his second exhibition at Haus der Kunst St. Josef. For the first presentation he travelled with his son Shuhei (b. 1997), who supported him during the installation. In the current exhibition Ryuha, father and son now appear together with their works.
Ryuha refers to a school of art in which stylised and structured skills, techniques and traditions are passed on. Rinpa is the most renowned of all Ryuha schools. The main characteristic of the Rinpa style is the use of gold and silver leaf.
Atsuo Hukuda is a sculptor who employs traditional Japanese painting techniques and materials such as silver leaf, gold leaf and urushi lacquer. For more than 35 years, Hukuda has also worked as a curator and is particularly recognised for his achievements with the Concept Space.

After four years of art studies in Okinawa, where he focused on traditional Japanese painting, Shuhei moved to Tokyo in 2019 to continue his education at Tokyo University of the Arts.

For both Japanese artists, three elements hold equal importance in the exhibition context: the space, the work, and the person within the space.
