DE Seine Werke, an die Minimal Art angelegte Position, zeugen von wunderbarer Klarheit. Bauwerkstoffe dienen als Bildträger. Isolationsmatten werden verbaut zu einem containerartigen Gebilde. Der Innenraum ist bemalt. John Beech nennt es «Inside Painting». Wie er vor vielen Jahren die Container in seinem Quartier in Brooklyn fotografierte und die grossformatigen Fotografien danach übermalte und mit Klebeband verklebte, so beschäftigt sich der Künstler heute mit seinem Innern. Metallkuben und Plastikschalen erfahren eine ebensolche Verarbeitung wie es beim grossen Container der Fall ist.

Noch einen Schritt weiter geht John Beech bei seinen neuen, ebenfalls diesen Sommer während seines Aufenthaltes als Artistin Residence im Haus der Kunst St. Josef entstandenen «Closed Paintings». Die jeweils zu einem Doppelbild bemalte Leinwand legt Beech noch nass übereinander und generiert mittels der Abklatsch-Technik eine neue Komposition (Intra #1).

Beech’s works, which apply the principles of Minimal Art, bear witness to a wonderful clarity. Building materials form the basis for images. Isolation mats are reconfigured into a container-like structure. The space inside is painted, which John Beech calls “Inside Painting.” Many years ago, he photographed the containers that resided in his district of Brooklyn, before painting over the large-format photographs and dressing them with duct tape. Today, the artist explores his inner life in a similar manner. Metal cubes and plastic bowls are processed in the same way as giant containers.

In his “Closed Paintings”, which were created this summer during his stay as Artist in Residence at the Haus der Kunst St. Josef, John Beech goes one step further, laying the still-wet screens, which are painted as a double image, on top of each other, generating a new composition through a technique of imitation (Intra #1).
