Thomas Pihl

15.01. – 11.03. 2012

After his show in the Palazzo Bembo at Venice Biennale 2011, Norwegian artist Thomas Pihl is now exhibiting his work in Switzerland for the first time. In addition to the large-format paintings from Venice, Thomas Pihl is presenting several newly created small formats in Haus der Kunst.

Thomas Pihl has developed an incomparable and highly poetic, emotional monochrome style of painting, and has been exploring the art-form of series since as far back as the turn of the millennium. These paintings are works of numerous layers of semi-transparent acrylic colors, poured onto the screen. With their smooth surfaces and oscillating colors, Pihl captures and simultaneously subverts the perfect aesthetic of visual everyday culture. The result of his many layered processes demands long and concentrated observation. The complex colors, fine differences and imperfections of these unique works are thus slowly manifested.
